Stenello Prugnoli

Dad Arduino and history of Porto Pozzo

Stenello Prugnoli
Meeting Stenello a hot summer afternoon at the restaurant that Dad Arduino founded in the early 60s and which bears the name, beginning what would become, for Porto Pozzo, the main resource of the local economy: tourism.
At the time, and we talk about the war and for all the '50s, we lived here fishing. The coastline, which faces directly on La Maddalena and its archipelago, here draws a particular shape that in addition to the natural beauty thanks to what would later become one of the most famous and popular tourist destinations of Gallura, brought great multitude of fish.
Just why that area was called the marina and Peschiera lies exactly at the base of the hill known as Coluccia, where now stands one of the most charming accommodations in the area.

He greets me in a very friendly, as it is used throughout this island, and takes me into a room where they herded countless framed photos, mostly black and white, that tell the story of father Arduino and Porto Pozzo.
The first image that shows resumes 3 figures, one of which is very different, especially in clothing and physical appearance, elegant in clear leaders wearing, probably linseed, high and dry, especially smiling.
And it is on this that Stenello of pauses and attacks "this is the story of Gallura ... see this? is the famous Nicolo Dona Rose ... here I was 13 years old, we are in the 60/61...".

You know who we're talking about? He asks. I would answer yes, but Stenello is a river of words difficult to defend.
He points, pictured at right, another figure with hat and light shirt, this uncle Angelo, called the hermit, who was owner of Coluccia.
Then with your finger lingers only for a moment on the young side of the hermit and says "this is me", nothing else.
He likes to talk about others, those who were the architects of this insight that would change the fate of an entire community and given prestige to this small fishing village. "This other side, however, is Giovanni Maria Sanna said" Picciaredda ".

He tells me that Nicolo Dona Rose were taking interest in those areas because the Costa Smeralda was there to be born, just because of the location and the coastline responded perfectly to the ideas that the noble family had in mind.

To try to minimize the risks, Nicolo Dona Rose met these people showing up as a mechanic, stating that though his father had some money to buy a piece of land.

"Look here what brings the wrist, this is a rolex ... and his car was a Porsche... he used to attend people of the show, the world of high finance, women and men most famous... you know? "he asks again.
In short, it was revealed his true identity soon enough, thanks to a business card that he left in the hands on which "there was worldwide... - says Stenello - New York, Paris, Milan... well, all over the world ".
Remember that Uncle Angelo, said the hermit, which Nicolo Dona Rose had put up this business card, the summons with the wave of his hand and says "if chistu is mechanical, eu socu lu pope...".
Stenello explains that the count had perhaps underestimated uncle Angelo, who betrayed in appearance, but in reality he had studied all'Azuni, where they released two presidents, was not illiterate as the Count could not believe, so much so that then he arises between the two, a nice and sincere friendship.

"But there is so much to write a book one day I thought to do..." says Stenello.
I urge you to talk about Pope Arduino and tells me that the Lazio where he was born, arrives in Cannigione in '58, like many in those days, because of the abundance of fish, especially in that area.
The following year he moved to Porto Pozzo, where it then reaches the whole family.
The fishing was good and profitable, but Arduino looked a bit 'away, in the direction of the future, understanding what were the natural characteristics of the area, highly rated in the tourism market.
So it was that began the work of this building, facilitated by the lack of too much bureaucracy, many permits, precise Stenello.
'62 Goes back to the first document attesting the existence of the restaurant Arduino, now a destination for large customers, because dad Arduino was well known for the work of the previous fisherman and, since his son Stenello kept that job that would keep forever, certainly not lacking on the tables of the restaurant the raw material, fresh seafood and cooked in a very natural and genuine.
The restaurant becomes then hotel to give hospitality to those who wanted to stop after eating.
That accommodation has given development to the resort, as it allowed to stop and then to live that area for several days.
The very first place, the only one that existed in Porto Pozzo Arduino before, was the Trattoria da Brancaccio - wants to point out Stenello - founded by the family Mannoni (also decisive in the history of Gallura), which then will travel to Santa Teresa Gallura open what would become one of the most popular restaurants in Sardinia, Reeds in the Wind (now no longer in business).

For several minutes the son of Stenello, which was named after his grandfather Arduino, is devoted to the preparation of the tables, partnered by his sister Joan, between interior room, but especially on the terrace, because it will soon begin to arrive first customers of the evening, wants to clarify Stenello "are not customers, they are friends, there is a relationship which binds us to them from years and decades... so many of them we saw them come with small parents, are now large and are with their family... do you understand? "he repeats like a refrain, to close the sentence.

Stenello then he tells his wife Tonina that will get underway in the kitchen just become married to the soul, then remained there forever, when management will pass to Moreno brother from '92 to 2000, and later to the children and Giovanna Arduino.
It will be with their advent the local take on the final name of Ristorante Il Corallo from Arduino.
The young Arduino asks dad Stenello to show me a little picture on the wall "show it to Roberto - he says - what has it brought the former superintendent of Sassari who was here as a child with his parents ... l ' He has found arranging old documents at home and have it flow. "
This time does not ask me if I get it, maybe because I interrupt for a moment before asking him to avvicinarmela. This is a receipt for 4900 pounds undated, probably dating back about 40 years ago, in the 70s, with capacities handwritten "because once you did so - says Stenello - and it was mother who was the bill, sitting at the table with customers... ".
Upon receipt specifying a plate of mussels and clams to 1050 pounds, a fish soup to 500 pounds, mullet to 1650 pounds, 200 pounds wine, a beer at 180 pounds and then covered something else.

Then he shows me a photo of his nephew Italian champion of body building that looks a lot like his grandfather Arduino, he says, then a framework where a German artist, a friend of the family, the father takes Arduino in a time of conflict with a person with whom you He had unleashed a diattriba not further explained. I think the German artist and tell myself that it must have been a bit 'particularly if he chose a moment of that kind to portray a person and then give him the canvas.
But whether originality and strangeness are always part of the stories that hold ancient times.
I speak of De Andrè that was common to see sitting at those tables and then Get going even fishing buddy.
Stenello leave while his son Arduino is welcoming guests with handshakes and hugs, reflecting the friendship and familiarity.
The terrace is slowly filling up, the aromas that come from the kitchen are the fresh fish, the pizza that passed me has the air of being good and crispy, the time that is coming up is that of the dinner. For me too.

Thank Stenello with a solid handshake, while Giovanna Arduino and launch a more fleeting greeting as I see them committed to welcoming customers friends.
I leave behind a nice chat and I leave, taking with me another beautiful story of Gallura.
